Women's Her-story Month: One Woman, One Voice, One Mission

Mar 28, 2024

In 2011, while navigating the festive chaos of Christmas shopping, I chanced upon a bracelet that immediately called out to me. Engraved with the words, "Though she be but little, she is fierce," it was a serendipitous find that I couldn't leave behind. Little did I know, this phrase about Hermia from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, often celebrated as one of the first feminist characters in literature, would become a Mantra to help guide my own journey. This bracelet wasn’t just a piece of jewelry; it was a declaration of my essence—small in stature, yet fierce and fearlessly navigating life.

Fast forward a decade, I found myself amidst the most challenging 'disorienting dilemma' of my life: facing a divorce after nearly two decades of marriage. This crucible moment forced me to confront and question the very core of my identity. Who was I beyond the roles I had so comfortably inhabited?  I found myself grappling with fear, questioning whether I could truly trust in my own judgment.

When I was just six years old, I experienced my first 'disorienting dilemma' with a disturbing incident that made me realize the harsh realities of being a female in a world that's not always kind to us. This experience marked the beginning of my lifelong quest for resilience, understanding, and advocacy against the societal constraints that keep people in fear and oppressed.

The realization that I couldn't depend on anyone but myself for protection and fulfillment (a sentiment echoed by Susan B. Anthony)  sparked a fierce determination within me. Diving deep into the mysteries of the body's inner workings, I challenged the prevailing narratives spun by powerful industries that preyed on our fears and vulnerabilities. The years of research and work with the USDA unveiled the deceptive practices of the food industry, further fueling my mission to empower others with knowledge and autonomy.

Embarking on my medical school journey, I was fueled by a vision to revolutionize healthcare from the core. However, this path unraveled a 'disorienting dilemma' as the stark contrast between my idealistic vision and the harsh realities of the medical system became apparent. I was confronted with the jarring realization that "you need to conform before you can reform".  This insight struck me profoundly, and I requested a sabbatical from my studies mid-way through my second year.  Hoping to gain insight into the human condition I began traveling through England, Wales, and the Middle East on a shoestring budget. It was a period of deep reflection and learning, where I connected with the universal human yearnings for love, safety, and connection, experiences that transcended the confines of culture and geography.  It sounds trite but "people are the same wherever you go.  We are all doing the best we can to get our needs met".

Just before returning home from my year of sabbatical travels, I had a serendipitous encounter with one of my Medical School Professors. I asked him for advice because I was faced with another "disorienting dilemma". I was unsure if I should return to medical school as my strong desire to make a positive impact in the world seemed to clash with the values promoted by the medical industry.  He gave me 3 pieces of wisdom I carry with me always in life: "Never take yourself too seriously, Never let medicine be your identity, and remember that medicine is only a tool".  This advice reinvigorated me with confidence, and I committed myself to serving women from all walks of life, particularly those marginalized by lack of choice and opportunity. This commitment was not just a professional oath but a personal crusade to honor the sacrifices and struggles of the countless women who paved the way for the freedoms I enjoy today. I believe that taking action is necessary to truly express gratitude, as much is expected when much is given.

During the 'disorienting dilemma' of my marriage dissolution, I felt lost and unsure of who I was. I was afraid that my identity was unraveling. However, in those moments of doubt and fear, the stories of amazing women throughout history, such as Cabrini, Tubman, Anthony, and Yousafzai, inspired me to be resilient and purposeful. The fierce spirit of Hermia, represented by a bracelet I cherish, also served as a beacon of hope. These women's lives and legacies are a testament to the power of being a strong and determined woman. They helped me remember that I can rise above adversity and fight for health, empowerment, and equality for all women.

I continue to draw strength from the incredible women of history whose lives embodied the vision of One Woman Mission (OWM). Women like Cabrini, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Malala Yousafzai have shown us that despite the challenges of life, we can effect monumental change.

Cabrini taught me that "the world is too small for what I intend to do," urging us to think big in our missions. Harriet Tubman's reminder that "Every great dream begins with a dreamer" reignites the passion to dream and act boldly. Susan B. Anthony's tireless pursuit of reform has paved the way for women to stand taller, freer, and equal today. Her unwavering dedication to proactive and independent work is a shining example of how one person's conviction can make a lasting impact on the world.  And Malala Yousafzai, with her belief in the "power of one," demonstrates the immense impact of even a single voice.

As we close Women's Her-story Month, let us draw inspiration from these extraordinary women. Let their courage and dedication embolden us to step into our One Woman Missions, uniting in a collective endeavor for hope and healing.
